To carry out sports, an outdoor track and field is needed. When holding large-scale sports competitions, the venue should comply with the regulations of various competition rules. All regions and units can also build some simple sports venues according to their actual conditions and local conditions for the general public to use when exercising.

There are two types of track and field: standard and on-site design (non-standard). Regardless of the type of track and field, there must be several running tracks around it, there should be a field for designing ball games, and there should be empty bottoms on both sides and both ends for building sand pits and some throwing areas.

The structure of the surface layer of the track of the track and field venue has developed from soil layer to a mixed layer of cinder, lime and clay. With the development of science and technology, plastic tracks appeared in the early 1960s. In the 1980s, the radius of the curve of the track and field track increased from 36 meters to 37.898 meters, and then to 36.50 meters. Experience shows that most 400-meter semicircular tracks are built with a curve radius of 35 meters to 38 meters, which is appropriate. The Athletics Federation proposes to build a track with a radius of 36.50 meters as much as possible. The three different radius tracks are all called "400-meter standard semicircular track and field stadiums". At present, the venues used for various track and field competitions held in China are mostly tracks with the above radius.
